Columbia, S.C. (Jan. 7, 2016) – SmartState Endowed Chair in Medication Safety and Efficacy, Dr. Charles Bennett, will join us for Science Café January 12, 2016, 6:00 p.m. at Speakeasy in Five Points, 711 Saluda Ave.

Screen Shot 2016-01-08 at 11.29.56 AMDr. Bennett is a hematologist, oncologist and an active National Institutes of Health funded research scientist, who began receiving grant funding in 1989. His work identifies potentially fatal side effects of billion dollar pharmaceuticals including EPO, the pharmaceutical agent that helped Lance Armstrong win the Tour de France, along with MRI dyes, CIPRO, Levaquin, Tamiflu, and others. Dr. Bennett and his team study ways to make drug information more consumer-friendly and create new training tools for healthcare providers.

Supplemental to his research, Dr. Bennett has also authored more than 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts on pharmaceutical safety. They have most recently appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet Oncology, JAMA Oncology, the Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Blood.

Dr. Bennett graduated with a BA and major in mathematics and minor in chemistry and Phi Beta Kappa/High Honors from Swarthmore College in 1981. He also received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1984, and his PhD, Masters in Public Policy from the RAND Graduate School for Public Policy in Santa Monica in 1989 with honors in social science methods.

The SmartState Medication Safety and Efficacy Center of Excellence was developed with a $6 million commitment from the state of South Carolina. Dr. Bennett was appointed as the SmartState and Frank P and Josie M Fletcher Chairs in medication safety and efficacy.
