Upstate Icon Set to Welcome Visitors Back: Pretty Place Chapel Reopens This August

One of South Carolina’s most legendary and breathtaking mountain destinations is preparing to welcome the public back through its gates. Fred W. Symmes Chapel, universally known as “Pretty Place,” will officially reopen for public visitation on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The upcoming reopening follows a planned three-month public hiatus that began on May 22. The temporary restriction was enacted by leadership at YMCA Camp Greenville to protect camper safety and preserve operations during the peak of their summer overnight camp season.

Balancing Popularity and Tradition

Perched at an elevation of 3,200 feet atop Standing Stone Mountain in northern Greenville County, the open-air chapel offers a sweeping panoramic view of the Blue Ridge foothills. In recent years, its popularity has skyrocketed, drawing more than 200,000 sightseers, hikers, and photographers annually.

Because the chapel is located on private property owned by the YMCA, the massive influx of daily vehicle and foot traffic necessitated a new seasonal strategy.

“YMCA Camp Greenville is foremost a summer overnight camp for kids and families,” camp executive leadership noted when the policy was introduced. “To continue to honor our core purpose, Pretty Place Chapel will be closed to the public when campers and summer staff are onsite so that we can provide them the best and safest experience possible.”

While casual sightseeing was paused during the summer months, previously booked private events, including dozens of weddings and memorials, continued to take place at the historic 1941 structure.

As the August 24 reopening date approaches, organizers urge eager visitors to remember that the chapel’s operational schedule changes frequently due to private event bookings throughout the autumn months. To avoid driving up the mountain only to find the gates closed for a private ceremony, guests should check the live, rolling schedule online before departing.

Essential Visitor Guidelines:

• Check the Calendar: The public schedule is updated roughly two weeks in advance. Check the calendar the morning of your trip to verify open public hours.

• Admission: There is no cost to visit the chapel during designated public hours, though donations supporting camp scholarships are welcomed.

• Pet Policy: For safety and operational reasons, only designated service animals are permitted inside the chapel area.
