Local musicians band together to help end childhood drowning

Greenville, SC – Local Musician Charles Hedgepath and Upstate Splash Charity announce the first ever Upstate Splash Freestyle Jam. Upstate Splash is a local charity dedicated to preventing childhood drowning in the Upstate by raising awareness and funds to provide swim lessons to at-risk or underprivileged children. Hedgepath, a musician well known for volunteering his talents for local charities, approached Upstate Splash with the idea of a benefit concert to support the cause. With swimming season almost here, musicians and volunteers rallied together to create a night of music that will change the lives of children all over the Upstate. Event sponsors include Fete, Greenbriar Farms, Upstate Pool Management, Great Upstate.com, Greenville Splash, The Trough Boys, Quest Brewing Co., Smoke N Brew and Gottrocks.

The Upstate Splash Freestyle Jam will take place Sunday, May 22nd 2016 at Gottrocks on Pleasantburg Drive from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Gottrocks has gone through some unique upgrades over the past year with outdoor seating area and artistic rennovations inside as well. Tickets for the Upstate Splash Freestyle Jam are $25 and include food, drinks, and an evening of great music for an important cause. The musical lineup includes Col. Bruce Hampton, Reverand Jeff Mosier, Yonrico Scott, Jeff Sipe, Charles Hedgepath, Darby Wilcox, Sam Kruer and more. This line up will consist of true sounds of folk, bluegrass, jazz and rock. All proceeds will go directly to the organization to provide scholarship swim lessons in the Upstate.

Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4 and the second cause of death in children below 14 years of age. The Upstate Splash Charity is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that started in 2015. Founder and Executive Director of Upstate Splash, Steven Scott, created the organization with its first Open Water Swim fund raiser in late 2015. “Two hundred people came to pay and swim in a lake that on any other day they could swim in for free. We are overcome with the community support we have received for being such a new charity” says Scott. Upstate Splash has funded over 200 swim lessons for at-risk/underprivileged children, and plans to raise that number in 2016.
