Upstream Mindfulness Center Offers Second Class Series in Five Points

COLUMBIA, SC – April 17, 2013Jemme B. Stewart and Dr. Hilda White announced that Upstream: A Center for Mindfulness Practice and Holistic Mental Health will launch its Spring II MBSR Class Series for students of all ability levels on April 29, 2013. This peaceful, contemporary mindfulness studio in Five Points, founded in June 2012, opened its doors in February, 2013 to offer the first Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) classes to the Columbia, South Carolina area.  

MBSR is a structured, complementary medicine program that uses mindfulness, a mental mode of being in the present without evaluation or emotional reaction, to help students better manage stress, anxiety, pain, sleep issues and a variety of other health issues. Mindfulness techniques employed include breathing exercises, mindful meditation and gentle stretching and movement.

Spring II 2013 Class Series details

·       Orientation: Monday, April 29, 2013, 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m.

·       Classes: Mondays, May 6-June 24, 9:00 a.m.-11:15 a.m.,

·       Day-long retreat: Saturday, June 15, 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Upstream’s class series are modeled after the original MBSR teaching program, founded by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

The goal: to help busy people relax, develop positive coping skills and enhance well-being of both mind and body.
