February 14, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – Lace up your running shoes and join us February 21, 2015, for the 2015 March for Meals 5K – The Wild Run!  We are excited that USC Women’s Basketball Coach, Dawn Staley has agreed to start the 12th Annual March for Meals 5K Run & Walk!  Senior Resources Pam Dukes, Executive Director said, “We appreciate Coach Staley, one of our most respected citizens for lending her support to March for Meals.  Her endorsement of our mission is invaluable.”

This annual fundraising event will be held at Timmerman Trail in Cayce, SC, for the first time. Thanks to the generosity of SCE&G and the City of Cayce, March for Meals will be the inaugural 5K to be held on the scenic trail. The start time for runners will be at 9 a.m., with walkers starting approximately five minutes later. Strollers are not permitted in the 5K run, but are welcome on the 5K walk. The course is relatively flat and mostly paved. Visit tinyurl.com/marchformeals to view the course map.  March for Meals is a nationwide initiative to support Meals On Wheels and other local meal programs that serve the elderly. In addition to raising money for the meals programs at Senior Resources, the March for Meals 5K will raise awareness of the issue of senior hunger in our community.

According to the National Foundation to End Senior Hunger, South Carolina ranks 7th-worst in the nation in terms of food instability among the elderly. Statewide, more than 18 percent of seniors are dealing with issues of hunger and food insecurity.

To register for the March for Meals 5K run and walk, please visit tinyurl.com/marchformeals and help us provide meals to our elderly neighbors. Registration is $35 for runners, $30 for walkers, and $15 for children under 12. There is also an option to purchase gloves for an additional $5 when you register.

T-shirts are not guaranteed after Friday, February 13, 2015.

The March for Meals 5K course is USATF certified and will be managed by Strictly Running.
