USC Next projects receive state approval

April 16, 2026

The legislature’s Joint Bond Review Committee and the S.C. State Fiscal Accountability Authority approved several key projects across the USC system, reflecting continued confidence in USC’s careful, long-term planning under its USC Next master plan.

Most notably, approvals were granted to modernize three of USC Columbia’s most prominent buildings — McKissick, Thomas Cooper Library and Barnwell College. These projects will preserve their historic character while upgrading classrooms, study space, and critical infrastructure, strengthening the academic core of campus and enhancing the student experience.

The projects reflect a disciplined financial approach, with significant investment supported by existing university resources.

Additional approvals included early-stage planning and targeted upgrades at University of South Carolina Upstate and University of South Carolina Beaufort.

Together, these actions represent another strong step forward in advancing USC’s vision through strategic, responsible investment across the system’s campuses.
