Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie has honored BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina executive Jim Hart with its 2007 Friend of the Campus award.

Hart, a BlueCross senior vice president, was recognized for his support of the Salkehatchie Healthy Communities Collaborative and the nursing program partnership between USC Salkehatchie and the university’s main campus in Columbia.

“The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie is proud to recognize Jim for his commitment to help us better serve the citizens of our region,” said Dr. Ann C. Carmichael, dean of USC Salkehatchie. “Jim has been a real advocate for improving wellness and health care opportunities for those in rural, underserved areas.”

Hart became familiar with the Salkehatchie health programs through his involvement with Healthy Learners in Allendale. Hart is chairman of the Healthy Learners Fund Development board of directors.

Healthy Learners, a part of the Salkehatchie Healthy Communities Collaborative, is a ministry of the Sisters of Charity of St. Augustine dedicated to improving the health and well-being of schoolchildren from economically disadvantaged families. The Collaborative is a partnership of health care providers and educators working to improve health care and encourage wellness in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Colleton and Hampton counties.

“I am honored to receive recognition from the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie,” Hart said. “I am grateful that we have been able to raise funds to promote wellness and access to health care in the USC Salkehatchie service area, and I am excited about the health care initiatives in place in those counties.”
