USC Upstate’s Johnson College of Business and Economics Maintains Prestigious AACSB Business Accreditation

February 27, 2015

SPARTANBURG, SC – The George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business and Economics at the University of South Carolina Upstate has maintained its business accreditation by AACSB International -The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Founded in 1916, AACSB International is the longest serving global accrediting body for business schools that offer undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral degrees in business and accounting. AACSB Accreditation is the hallmark of excellence in business education and has been earned by fewer than 5 percent of the world’s 15,671 business programs. The Johnson College is one of only 25 public, undergraduate business schools to earn this level of acclaim.

Dr. Frank Rudisill, dean of the Johnson College, is especially proud of the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and business leaders who are responsible for earning another five-year accreditation for the program, which enrolls nearly 700 students.

“Achieving and maintaining AACSB standards is a lofty milestone for the Johnson College and it is of huge benefit to our students and graduates,” said Rudisill. “It provides credibility to our program for students who want to attend graduate school and it puts our graduates on equal footing with their peers from the best undergraduate business programs in the world.”

According to Dr. Elnora Stuart, associate dean of the Johnson College, the AACSB Accreditation is also a vital accomplishment in the recruitment and retention of excellent faculty members as much of the criteria is based on having faculty who maintain their academic and professional qualifications and conduct research.

“It takes a great deal of commitment and determination to earn AACSB Accreditation,” said Robert D. Reid, executive vice president and chief accreditation officer of AACSB International. “Business schools must not only meet specific standards of excellence, but their deans, faculty, and professional staff must make a commitment to ongoing continuous improvement to ensure that the institution will continue to deliver the highest quality of education to students.”

USC Upstate opened the Johnson College in downtown Spartanburg in May 2010. It offers programs in business administration with concentrations in accounting, economics, general business, marketing, and management.
