USC Upstate Faculty Offered Innovation Grants

SPARTANBURG, SC – The University of South Carolina Upstate Foundation wants to invest in faculty members and encourage their creativity and innovation. Steve Harvey ’80, president of the USC Upstate Foundation, announced a new initiative, which was proposed by Chancellor Tom Moore, to establish $50,000 in Faculty Innovation Grant Funds.
Ten or more grants of up to $5,000 each will be given for curriculum innovations that might include interdisciplinary and cross-divisional courses and programs, new service learning models, innovative instructional concepts, and responses to discovered educational needs across the Upstate.
“The USC Upstate Foundation Board is delighted to support curriculum innovation by our University faculty,” said Harvey. “Ultimately, it will be our students who benefit from the teaching advances made possible by the cutting-edge efforts of the faculty.”
Moore added, “The heart and soul of our University is the faculty. I am eager for them to increase their engagement in experimentation and collaboration designing more engaging and effective learning experiences for students.”
All full-time faculty members will be eligible to apply for the USC Upstate Foundation Faculty Innovation Grants. Applications are due by March 16 and decisions will be announced in mid-April.
“This partnership with the faculty fits perfectly into our Foundation mission to support USC Upstate,” said Harvey.
Formed in 1973 as the Carolina Piedmont Foundation, and renamed in 2009, the USC Upstate Foundation has raised and administered funds in support of the University mission. The Foundation has helped to fund numerous facilities including the Palmetto and Magnolia Houses, the George Dean Johnson, Jr. College of Business & Economics, the Health Education Complex, Hodge Arena (which is home to Spartan Athletics), the Susan Jacobs Arboretum, the John M. Rampey Center, and numerous campus land acquisitions. The Foundation’s 28-member Board of Directors oversees fundraising efforts, as well as endowment and current funds totaling nearly $10 million.
