USC Upstate Foundation receives $50,000 from Fullerton Foundation

The University of South Carolina Foundation was awarded $50,000 from the Fullerton Foundation. This award is a single year grant for investment in technology to support the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program with a concentration area of Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) in the Mary Black School of Nursing at USC Upstate.

“We are extremely grateful for the generosity of the Fullerton Foundation and for their continued support,” said Bea Walters Smith, director of development and foundation scholarships at USC Upstate. “The program of study for Clinical Nurse Leader is delivered primarily online except for clinical courses so receiving funding for technology is critical for the University to be expand technology in the active learning classrooms and incorporate high-fidelity equipment in the Simulation Lab.”

According to Dr. Katharine Gibb, dean of the Mary Black School of Nursing at USC Upstate, clinical nurse leaders are a relatively new role in nursing. “The CNL is an advanced generalist who oversees the care coordination of a distinct group of patients and actively provides direct patient care in complex situations. This master’s degree-prepared clinician puts evidence-based practice into action to ensure that patients benefit from the latest innovations in care delivery.”

The CNL evaluates patient outcomes, assesses cohort risk and has the decision-making authority to change care plans when necessary. The CNL is a leader in the health care delivery system and the implementation of this role will vary across settings.
