Verizon Employees partner with USO to ease troops’ Journeys Home

Verizon stuffed thousands of care packages with travel necessities for troops stationed in the Palmetto State.

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – Verizon employees spent Friday morning sorting, stuffing and stacking thousands of care packages designed to ease trips home for members of the military based in South Carolina. The event took place at Verizon’s North Charleston Call Center and was a joint effort with the South Carolina USO.

“Troops in our state often travel long distances when they have an opportunity to return to their hometowns to see loved ones, and those trips are generally spent waiting for long periods in airports, train stations and bus stops,” said Joanie Thresher, executive director of the South Carolina USO. “A few simple travel necessities, like tissues, hand sanitizer and sweet treats can make trips home to see family and friends a bit easier for men and women in uniform.”

Verizon gave employees time off during the day so they could participate. To handle the large job, volunteers worked in shifts and formed an assembly line to stuff and load the bags into boxes that the USO will transport to military bases across South Carolina. Troops will receive the bags before heading home throughout the year – particularly during the upcoming Holiday season.

“Verizon is passionate about saying ‘thank you’ to our troops, and our company’s proud partnership with the South Carolina USO means that our passion is applied to the USO’s stated goals to serve those who serve our country,” said Krista Bourne, president Verizon Wireless Carolinas/Tennessee.
