Veteran-focused facility coming to Greenville

January 19, 2017

A new fitness facility aimed at closing the gap between military and civilian life will be opening this month on the emerging Poinsett District corridor.

The Outpost Training Facility will feature 3,000 square feet of functional fitness space with an area for weight training, as well as a large section of athletic turf for calisthenics, athletic and combat strength training. Within the facility, a unique wall constructed primarily of wood reclaimed from the old Greenville Furniture Exchange will highlight and preserve the property’s history.

The project is being led by Matt Cassabon and Josh Formaneck, who served together as engineering officers in the Army National Guard.

“We are focused on creating a community concentrated on fitness, as a means of bridging the gap between veterans and civilians,” Cassabon said. “We hope that our facility will provide a space where veterans and civilians alike can help each other to understand the different experiences and talents that each brings to the table.”

The Outpost will focus on three main program areas: OP Tactical, OP Athletic and OP Evolve.

  • Every operating environment places unique physical demands on military and first responders. With that in mind, the OP Tactical programs are geared toward improving functional strength and conditioning training focused on the various challenges required by the multi-dimensional environments that military and first responders face daily. Tactical programs integrate everything from traditional calisthenics to heavy-load and strength training.
  • OP Athletic training programs are focused on improving athletes’ performance on the field or the court. By integrating custom programs with specific and measurable goals tailored for their sport of choice, OP Athletics targets athletes who want to optimize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Athlete-focused programs include personalized evaluations before, during and after their program to determine the optimal training capacity and performance for each participant.
  • OP Evolve programs are comprehensive plans focused on improving strength, endurance and flexibility for gym regulars — and newcomers. These regimens integrate aspects of the OP Tactical and Athlete programs with a focus on improving overall health and wellness. Evolve programs integrate interval training along with strength and endurance training. While injury prevention and flexibility are critical components of each program, OP Evolve places additional emphasis on integrating safe training practices with maximum performance. OP Evolve is for weekend warriors or athletes, current or former military.

“The idea started as a casual conversation about how cool it would be to start a gym based on our military training, but on our own terms,” Formaneck said. “We want to provide a challenging workout for everyone, while also providing a place for veterans to find that same type of camaraderie from military life.”

Formaneck and Cassabon said they deliberately chose their site because they want to be part of the growth along the Poinsett Corridor. They said this area will be one of Greenville’s next boom spots.

The Outpost Training Facility will be open to everyone, regardless of any military affiliation. Discounted Founding Membership packages are currently available on their website.
