Unique, Patent-Pending Technology to Aid Improvements in Performance and Safety of Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Batteries

IRVINE, CA – July 28, 2009 –  VIASPACE, Inc., a clean energy company providing products and technology for renewable and alternative energy, announced that it has completed the sale and delivered one of its BA-1000 Battery Electrode Health Analyzer products to University of South Carolina.

The BA-1000 was delivered to the research group of Prof. Ralph E. White, Distinguished Scientist in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of South Carolina. Prof. White is an expert in the mathematical modeling of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that power virtually all portable electronic devices today and are a strong candidate for electric vehicles in the near future. These models are potentially important in predicting performance and safety of lithium batteries.

Improving the performance and safety of lithium batteries is a major challenge for battery manufacturers and their customers throughout the world. Battery capacity and safety is limited by electrode changes during charge and discharge cycles. The BA-1000 Battery Electrode Health Analyzer is the first instrument developed to study these changes using a new, patent pending, nondestructive technique, which enables continuous analysis over the lifecycle of the battery.

The BA-1000 battery analyzer measures standard battery performance, and also measures entropy and enthalpy which no other instrument in the marketplace does. Entropy and enthalpy are important fundamental thermodynamic parameters that are characteristic of electrode materials. Changes in entropy and enthalpy can nondestructively reveal internal changes in the battery that may lead to performance and safety issues.

Prof. White’s data taken with the BA-1000 is expected to be reported in the open scientific literature. An example of Dr. White’s research can be found in a recent paper titled Thermodynamic model development for lithium intercalation electrodes which was published in the Journal of Power Sources 185 (2008) 1398-1407.
