Virtual 30th Walk for Life and Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon brings Midlands community together in the fight against breast cancer

September 17, 2020

The Virtual 30th Walk for Life and Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon in Oct. represents 30 years of motivation, inspiration and innovation for Prisma Health Breast Center. The events, led by Prisma Health Midlands Foundation, have drawn thousands of supporters together for three decades, and proceeds have topped $11 million. Starting Oct. 3, the fight against breast cancer will continue with a virtual walk, 5K, 10K and half marathon.

“When we decided to go virtual in April, we never looked back because we knew our community—and beyond—would respond. We weren’t going to let COVID-19 interrupt the important work we’re doing to fight breast cancer in our community,” said Kristin Hudson, director of Walk for Life and Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon at Prisma Health Midlands Foundation.

Anyone, anywhere can register to walk or run in their favorite place, with their favorite people (or furry friend!), at any time in Oct. Registration includes a T-shirt (unisex), participants sticker and other goodies. Half marathon registrants will receive a finisher’s medal. Registered breast cancer survivors will be celebrated with a survivors hat and button. Registrants are encouraged to post a photo of their walk or run on their social channels and use the hashtag #Pink4Prisma.

“It’s been incredible to be part of such an outpouring of love and support for this important cause, even though it looks a little different this year,” said Dawn Hunt, event chair and breast cancer survivor. “Going virtual has opened up many new creative ways for people to show their support, and we are so grateful.”

Registration is open at WalkForLifeColumbia.org. Registration fees are $35 for Walk for Life, $50 for the Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon and $35 for the 5K or 10K. Registration fees won’t change.

A drive-through pickup for registrants who live in the 17-county area of the Midlands of S.C. will be held on Sept. 24, 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and Oct. 1, 1-6 p.m. at Prisma Health Midlands Foundation (back parking lot), 1600 Marion St., Columbia. For registrants outside the Midlands, a package will be mailed at no extra charge in late Sept. Additional donations to cover shipping costs are welcomed.

The 30th Walk for Life is presented by Dominion Energy. The Famously Hot Pink Half Marathon is presented by Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Proceeds from the 2020 virtual event will help Prisma Health Breast Center expand its locations. Proceeds also will continue to fund post-mastectomy camisoles, post-surgery breast bears and support materials for patients and families.
