How to rally an embattled nation
Visionary leaders learn a lot from history.
Rarely is life ever smooth sailing for any of us.
For leaders like you, it will be more challenging.
That’s because you’re willing to take greater risks.
You’re willing to seize greater opportunities.
You don’t settle for anything less than your best.
Winston Churchill was that kind of leader, too.
There are lessons to be learned from his life.
Lesson #1: Expect peaks and valleys in life.
Churchill’s was a roller coaster of spills and thrills.
As a young officer, he saw action in India and Africa.
He made a thrilling escape as a prisoner of war.
He was a popular author and war correspondent.
He entered politics from concern over liberal policies.
He served in leadership roles during World War I.
After the war, voters favored Labour Party promises.
That sent Churchill into the political wilderness.
Lesson #2: Prepare for dark times in your life.
The late 1930s were painful times for the world.
We were mired in a great economic depression.
The Nazis were rampaging through Europe.
Churchill warned Britain about Hitler’s ambitions.
Then Britain signed a conciliatory pact with Hitler.
Hitler had no intention to honor the pact hew signed.
He knocked off one European country after another.
Finally Britain stood alone against Nazi power.
The British voters turned to Churchill.
Lesson #3: Recruit allies to support your efforts.
Britain might not have lasted long against Hitler.
Churchill turned to the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
Americans wanted to stay out of the war.
World War I’s cost in American lives was enormous.
The U.S. did the next best thing.
It supplied Britain with what it needed to resist.
Perhaps only Churchill could have pulled that off.
He also provided the emotional steel to resist.
His radio speeches rallied the British people.
