Volta V sales to help support Upstate Forever

February 1, 2017

The Upstate company revolutionizing the computer industry by focusing on sustainability is working to assist the organization that focuses on sustainability across the region.

Computer Direct Outlet will give a portion of the proceeds of it sales of the new Volta V computer to Upstate Forever, a land conservation and advocacy organization that protects critical lands, waters, and the unique character of the Upstate of South Carolina.

“When we created the Volta V, we focused heavily on sustainability,” said Gary Underwood, owner of Computer Direct Outlet. “By working with Upstate Forever, we want to go beyond just creating a sustainable computer, but helping with the community at large.”

The Volta V is the first commercially produced computer featuring a handcrafted wooden case made from bamboo and walnut trees grown in the U.S. The cases are assembled by Upstate craftsmen, and then delivered to Computer Direct Outlet, where each one is outfitted to customer specifications.

Computer Direct Outlet has manufactured and serviced computers in the Upstate since 1997.  Their team has spent the past 15 months designing, prototyping, perfecting and lining up vendors to make the Volta V ship quickly now that preorders have started.

Andrea Cooper, Upstate Forever’s Executive Director, said her group is excited by the support from Computer Direct Outlet.

“Upstate Forever promotes balanced growth, natural resource protection, and sustainability,” Cooper said. “We are thrilled that a business like Computer Direct supports that internally and externally.”

How can a computer be sustainable? The Volta V offers a piece of technology that not only provides a powerful workstation – it is ethically designed. Using a magnetic toolless lid that allows the user to easily access the guts of the machine, the Volta V will be a stylish fixture of desks for years to come. The computer aims to grow with the owner, preventing them from trashing the entire computer just to upgrade its components. This allows them to avoid contributing to the 9.4 million tons of e-waste produced each year.

“By contributing to the local environment through Upstate Forever, Computer Direct Outlet hopes to shape the way computer manufacturers think about their products – and the way consumers use them,” Underwood said.
