Voters say Yes4SchoolsCHS and CMCC PAC endorsed candidates

November 11, 2014

CHARLESTON, SC – The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce thanks voters for their on-going support to ensure our region is on the path for future success.

The Education Capital Improvement Referendum appeared on the Nov. 4 Charleston County ballot. The Yes4SchoolsCHS campaign, run by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce, asked voters to approve the referendum, extending the one-penny sales tax. With over 67 percent of voters supporting the extension, the district is able to continue the current building program without delay, allowing for dozens of school construction and renovation projects aimed at alleviating the severe overcrowding issues.

“The successful passing of the referendum ensures we are doing everything we can as a community to provide our students with high-quality education,” said Patrick Bryant, Yes4SchoolsCHS campaign chairman. “Every school and every student in the district will be positively impacted.”

The Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee (CMCCPAC) also had a successful election with 10 out of 11 endorsed candidates being elected. CMCCPAC endorses candidates whose goals support the Chamber’s business advocacy priorities.

Successful endorsed Candidates include:

Anna Johnson Charleston County Council District 8
Mac McQuillin Berkeley County School Board District 2
Shannon Lee Berkeley County School Board District 4
Kate Darby Charleston County School Board – East Cooper
Chris Staubes Charleston County School Board – East Cooper
Cindy Bohn Coats Charleston County School Board – North Area
Justin Farnsworth Dorchester County District 2 School Board
Gail Hughes Dorchester County District 2 School Board
Brian Mitchum Dorchester County District 2 School Board

“We are excited for the results of this election and feel strongly that our elected officials will provide the Charleston metro region with the leadership we need to drive our region’s continued economic growth,” said Bryan Derreberry, President and CEO of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce.

Berkeley County residents also voted to extend the penny sales and use tax to fund infrastructure needs.
