SPARTANBURG, SC — Spartanburg-based Waldrop Mechanical Services, a full-service mechanical contracting firm, received national acclaim this month for the fifth consecutive year when it was presented with a “Best in Class” National Excellence in Construction Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors —  this time for its HVAC and plumbing work on the Clemson University Memorial Stadium Suite Renovation completed last September. Waldrop qualified for this year’s national awards competition after winning top honors at the ABC Carolinas Chapter level in November.

Waldrop received the Eagle Award — ABC’s  highest-level award — in the $2-$10 million Mechanical/Commercial category. Out of over 100 national awards presented, Waldrop was the only South Carolina-headquartered company to bring home a ”Best in Class” award in any category, at any level. The winning projects, selected from entries submitted from across the nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and cost. A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s judges.

“We are elated that this fast-track mechanical project was recognized at the top of its category in a national competition. Our team is very proud and humbled by the fact that our work stood out distinctively from a pool of 40 entries,” said Caldwell.

About the Project — Originally opened in 1942, Clemson Memorial Stadium has been home to the Clemson University football team for 73 years. Although parts of the stadium had been renovated over the years, by 2015 it was time for a complete overhaul of the two suite levels housed between the lower and top decks on each side of the stadium.  Waldrop’s HVAC scope of work included a new Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) HVAC system to serve the approximately 144,000-square-foot renovation. This work included installation of 187 new VRV cassettes to serve approximately 90 luxury suites, the large new South Club, and support spaces —  broadcast booth, command post and press box.

Waldrop’s plumbing scope of work included the removal of existing plumbing fixtures and the installation of 249 new fixtures, including new domestic water and sewer piping systems to serve them. Waldrop’s fast-track delivery of the project yielded a successful, quality installation in only 27 weeks.
