Waldrop Leadership Presented with Construction Industry’s Prestigious ABC Eagle Award on February 22 at National Conference of Associated Builders and Contractors in Phoenix, Arizona

SPARTANBURG, SC – February 27, 2012 – Spartanburg-based Waldrop Mechanical Services, a full-service mechanical contracting firm, is the proud recipient of a prestigious national construction award from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) for its exemplary work on a major HVAC renovation project at Wofford College.

Waldrop’s assignment involved a comprehensive mechanical upgrade of equipment and systems for two of Wofford’s student dormitories, Shipp Hall and DuPre Hall — both 40 years old. Waldrop received ABC’s 2011 Eagle Award — the highest level of recognition — in the Specialty Contracting category, Mechanical: Commercial (Less than $2 million). The award was formally presented to Waldrop leadership on February 22, 2012, in Phoenix, Arizona, at ABC’s Excellence in Construction Awards celebration. Held during ABC’s annual conference, the evening event honors the nation’s most innovative and high quality construction projects and safety programs.

Waldrop’s Bill Caldwell, President and Chief Executive Officer, noted that Waldrop was the only specialty contractor from both Carolinas to win an Eagle Award at the national event.  What makes this project and our team’s performance worthy of this prestigious award is that we overcame many challenges and obstacles without compromising the owner’s objectives of schedule, cost, quality, and safety. From the outset, the construction team was fully aware that the project had to be completed on time to accommodate the housing commitments made by the college to its students. Starting with our proposal, through preconstruction and into the construction phase, Waldrop’s management team worked tirelessly in a collaborative effort with the owner, the design team and construction team to deliver the project successfully.”

To be eligible for ABC’s national awards competition, projects had to be completed by August 31, 2011, and have previously won a top award at the ABC chapter level. Waldrop’s project for Wofford not only won an Eagle Award from ABC of the Carolinas in November 2011, it also was a finalist for the Carolinas’ 2011 Specialty Project of the Year.

About the Project

Renovation activities for the two Wofford College residence halls were executed simultaneously during the college’s 2011 summer break. Despite the challenges associated with an accelerated schedule, Waldrop delivered the project one week early. Waldrop’s $1.9 million contract was with local general contractor, J.M. Solesbee Construction Co., Inc., also based in Spartanburg.
