Waldrop wins big at National Conference of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) in Fort Lauderdale

SPARTANBURG, SC – Waldrop Mechanical Services, a full-service mechanical contracting firm based in Spartanburg, recently achieved national acclaim by winning three Best-in-Class industry awards for its exemplary work last summer in renovating the kitchen inside Bob Jones University’s main campus Dining Common facility.

Waldrop President & CEO Bill Caldwell accepted all three awards on March 5 during the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) national conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Out of nearly 100 national awards presented, Waldrop was the only South Carolina company to bring home an award, let alone three. Waldrop was honored with these awards:

  • ABC’s National Eagle Award, the highest-level award in the Mechanical/Commercial — Less than $2 Million category
  • Design Build Institute of America’s (DBIA) Design-Build Award for Best Design-Build project delivery in the Specialty Contractor category
  • ABC’s Productivity Award for the most productive and efficient project delivery in the Specialty Contractor category.

The judges noted, “Relying on its design-build expertise, Waldrop installed efficient mechanical, plumbing, fire protection and electrical systems in the kitchen area of a university dining hall — achieving substantial completion in just 82 days — which was remarkably 11 days early as compared to its 93-day contracted schedule.”

“Being recognized by our industry peers as the Best-in-Class for three unique award categories is truly remarkable and unprecedented,” said Caldwell. “This industry-wide recognition certainly would not have been possible without the proper planning and expedited delivery of the work by everyone on our project team — our employees, design team members, subcontractors, vendors, and service providers.”

ABC 2015 National Chairperson, Pamela Volm of Annapolis, Maryland, added, “Waldrop truly embraced the values of ABC and merit shop construction by its demonstration of teamwork, effective planning, innovation, productivity, and delivery of a quality project on time within budget, safely while exceeding all of the customer’s project expectations.”

Waldrop teamed with three other Upstate firms — Peritus Engineers, Craig Gaulden and Davis, and Burdette Engineering — to provide the turnkey design-build services required for the project.
