We Are Sharing Hope SC celebrates donation milestone in South Carolina

January 31, 2023

We Are Sharing Hope SC, the state’s nonprofit organ and tissue recovery service, honors more donor legacies than ever before. Last year, 894 South Carolina families made the selfless decision and consented for their loved one to give the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation. Their generosity and courage marked a milestone in South Carolina.

In 2022, there were 230 organ donor heroes, resulting in 612 organs transplanted and 512 lives saved by South Carolina donors. 390 tissue donor heroes helped enhance the quality of life for more than 48,000 Americans, a 6% increase since 2021.

“I am inspired by the extraordinary generosity and strength of South Carolina donor heroes and their families for choosing to say “YES” to this gift with the intent to save and enhance lives. This selfless decision is an act of love and humanity, and we are proud to play a role in honoring every legacy and saving every life, every time,” said Dave DeStefano, President/CEO of SHSC.

The extraordinary milestone impacted many lives in 2022. It would not have been possible without the generosity of our community, the efforts of the organization’s passionate and dedicated staff and the healthcare partners who work tirelessly to save lives.

The national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) of the United States remained the most efficient donation and transplantation system, innovating processes and technologies to save and improve more lives. In 2022, the U.S. surpassed a historic milestone with 1 million organ transplants, more than any other country. This milestone demonstrates a powerful trend of system-wide improvements, allocation policies and the collaborative efforts to increase donation rates.

One organ, eye and tissue donor can save eight lives, potentially restore the sight for two people and improve the lives of up to 75 people. South Carolinians can make that life-saving decision to become a donor by registering at any SC DMV or on the iPhone Health app. For additional information on donation and to register, visit SharingHopeSC.org.
