Weekend Networking – What Is Outdoor Appropriate Attire?

There are many places to network including lunch with a connected friend, drinks with a potential client, or a sporting event with the boss and now that it’s spring a lot of those events will be outside.

While networking is about making advantageous connections and promoting your career, it’s not the same as an interview, so that means changing up both your approach and your wardrobe. In casual, outdoor environments you should relax your look a little, but flip-flops and shorts are not really the best way to go. Here are a few tips to keep in mind when deciding if your look is both professional and outdoor-appropriate:

 

1. A collar is not optional. While a t-shirt or tank may be your weekend go-to top they are not professional options. Whether it’s a game or a barbeque, your shirt should always have a collar. It keeps your look clean and polished. Whether you choose an airy linen oxford or classic cotton polo shirt is up to you.
2. Making shorts work. Shorts are not a definite no-no, but there are some limits on the length. You never want to show too much skin so opt for longer shorts. The standard for ladies is at least a 5-inch inseam and gentlemen should go for a 7-inch inseam. These will fall above your knee while covering your thighs. Another tip for dressing up a pair of shorts is to keep the leg tailored.
3. Show your toes the right way. Logistically there may not be a big difference between flip-flops and sandals, but when it comes to professional appearance they are worlds apart. Leather sandals can pull together your look in a way flip-flops can’t, and they look more refined. If you’re not comfortable showing your toes you can always choose a sleek pair of sneakers, but I would leave the broken in boat shoes at home.
4. Finish your look with accessories. Sunglasses are almost required for outdoor events, but they are not all the same. Aviators are classic and a better choice than plastic sports frames and please no Croakies. When it comes to your watch leather and canvas straps are more appropriate than metal.

 

Once you’re outside the office the rules of dressing become vague, but there are still best practices. If you’re ever in doubt, you can ask a friend or just remember the golden rule: ‘dress for success every day since you never know whom you will meet.’
