June 16, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – Since 1974, the teams at Providence Heart & Vascular Institute have touched more than 130,000 hearts through open-heart surgeries, cardiac catheterizations, and for the last year, TAVR: transcatheter aortic valve replacement.

The Advanced Valve Care team at Providence was the FIRST to bring TAVR to the Columbia area, and is just one of many achievements as we proudly mark our 40th anniversary as the premier heart program in the Midlands.

Performed the FIRST heart catheterization in the Midlands in March, 1974.

Performed the FIRST open heart surgery in the Midlands in September, 1974, launching the FIRST major heart program of any area hospital – with some of the nation’s best results.

Performed MORE open-heart surgeries andcardiac catheterizations than any other heart program in South Carolina.

Achieved the HIGHEST honor of 3 stars from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for 15 consecutive rating periods—every time since the award’s inception.

Providence Hospitals Development Foundation congratulates our teams for bringing innovative procedures, like TAVR, to our patients and community and for their continued commitment to quality outcomes that deliver a higher standard of care.
