What you need to know to dispel myths about city flood repair permitting

November 11, 2015

COLUMBIA, SC – The City of Columbia has published City Flood Repair Myths & Facts: What You Need to Know to dispel myths about City flood repair permitting, give property owner the real facts, and provide additional information flood victims might find useful.

Myths dispelled include the rumor that some homeowners are allowed to follow different rules than the rest of the City – they are not, one that owners must wait for FEMA go-ahead to start rebuilding – they do not have to, and another that property owners must use the damage estimate provided by FEMA or the flood inspector – they can use a repair estimate from a state-licensed general contractor.

In addition, City staff will be part of two upcoming open houses held jointly with Richland County to answer questions and help property owners through the Flood Hazard Permit Application process. These open houses will be:

  • Monday, November 165:30pm-7:30pm – St. Andrews Park, 920 Beatty Road
  • Monday, November 2310:00 am-2:00 pm – Richland County Council Chambers, 2020 Hampton Street
