Greenville city councilman launches campaign centered on experienced leadership and a vision for the city’s next chapter
Greenville City Councilman Wil Brasington officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Greenville today.
Joined by his family, friends and community supporters, Brasington launched a campaign centered on “keeping Greenville, Greenville” for current residents and generations to come.
“We’re a city that’s changing—there’s no doubt about that,” Brasington said. “The key is going to be determining how exactly we want this change to look at the end of the day.”
Brasington said Greenville’s growth and success have created tremendous opportunities, but the city must manage that growth intentionally while protecting the character, neighborhoods and quality of life that make Greenville home.
Brasington said keeping Greenville residents safe in every neighborhood will be a central focus. He plans to spend the coming months listening to residents and sharing his broader vision for how Greenville can manage change while serving people throughout the city.
“Growth should lift all of Greenville, not just the parts of it people put on postcards,” Brasington said. “My vision is for a safe city that manages growth thoughtfully, serves every neighborhood and remains a place where people can build their lives for generations to come.”
Brasington has served on Greenville City Council since 2017. Before joining Council, he served on the City of Greenville Planning Commission, as president of the Alta Vista Neighborhood Association and as a commissioner of the Greenville Water System.
Professionally, Brasington is the Chief Executive Officer of the Clemson Alumni Association, where he leads an organization that engages with more than 200,000 alumni worldwide. In addition to serving as the head of alumni relations for Clemson University, he facilitates the affairs of the Association’s board of directors and oversees all managerial, financial, and programmatic components of the organization. He previously served an assignment as a special advisor to the President of Clemson University.
Brasington has also held leadership roles with the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Revitalization Corporation, Greenville County Redevelopment Authority, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas and is a graduate of Leadership South Carolina.
Brasington said his experience in neighborhood, civic, municipal and executive leadership has given him a firsthand understanding of Greenville’s growth and the work required to prepare the city for its next chapter.
“This is not a responsibility I take lightly,” Brasington said. “Since joining City Council in 2017, I’ve worked to make our city better and stronger in every measurable aspect. Now I’m asking for the opportunity to continue that work as Greenville’s next mayor.”
Brasington lives in Greenville with his wife, Laura, and their two children, Elizabeth and Wilson.
