Wine With a Purpose

Charitable organizations here in Columbia and across the country all need help.  Not just one-time help, but ongoing help.  Fundraising is difficult and is competitive as donors have to decide who gets their hard earned dollars.  Unless you have a bank account like Warren Buffet or Bill Gates, you just can’t support every organization that comes along.  Besides writing an annual check to your organization of choice, you can now support a variety of good causes just by buying and drinking wine.

The idea for ONEHOPE Wines evolved initially out of an effort to help a friend fighting cancer.  Then, in 2007, eight founding partners came together and started ONEHOPE Wines with the mission of selling wine so that they could support various causes year round.  They partnered with Rob Mondavi, Jr. to produce good, affordable wines and decided to donate half of the profits for each wine (about $3 per bottle) to a specific cause.  From ONEHOPE’s team:  HOPE is all about making the world better, and giving people an easy way to make a difference.  Wine is a living, breathing commodity that has always helped bring people together in common purpose.

ONEHOPE wines and their supported causes:

  • Sparkling Brut (End Childhood Hunger)
  • Chardonnay (Breast Cancer)
  • Sauvignon Blanc (Supporting Our Planet)
  • Pinot Noir (Promoting Pet Adoption)
  • Cabernet Sauvignon (Supporting Children with Autism)
  • Merlot (Fight Against AIDS)
  • Zinfandel (Supporting Our Troops)
  • And from our local celebrity – Darius Rucker Signature Series Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Supporting children with disabilities)

I like this organization’s effort because, beyond the charitable aspect, the wine is good.   It isn’t just a throwaway marketing gimmick.  If it was bad wine I would write a check rather than waste time with something I wouldn’t drink.  But you can relax, it is good wine.  You can support your favorite cause by adding these to your personal collection or if you’re involved with an associated charity, use these wines at your next event.  The wines are available at various retailers and restaurants in South Carolina and from ONEHOPE’s website:  www.onehopewine.com

ONEHOPE has also moved into other areas, after the success of their wine business:  ONE HOPE Coffee & Tea, Hope at Home, and ONEHOPE Weddings.  Don’t forget our local charities, but expand your generosity by pouring a glass or two of ONEHOPE!
