Winthrop Named to Victory Media’s 2017 Military Friendly® Schools List

Winthrop University has earned a place on Victory Media’s 2017 Military Friendly® Schools List for the institution’s exceptional service to veterans.

Winthrop will be showcased with other 2017 Military Friendly® Schools in the December issue of “G.I. Jobs®” magazine as well as the January 2017 issue of “Military Spouse” Magazine and online at www.militaryfriendly.com.

“We are deeply honored to receive this designation because supporting veterans in their transition from military to student life is a service we enthusiastically provide,” said President Dan Mahony. “Assisting veterans is an important part of achieving our strategic plan’s goal to enhance the academic and co-curricular Winthrop experience for all students.”

Benchmark standards for inclusion on the Military Friendly® Schools List include academic policies and compliance; admissions and orientation; culture and commitment; financial aid and assistance; graduation and career; and military student support and retention.

Winthrop, a Yellow Ribbon school, offers a number of programs to support veterans, including the Office of Military, Adult, and Transfer Services; the Office of Veterans Benefits; Army and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC); and the Student Veterans of Winthrop, an organization which provides a network of support to military veterans and their families in the Winthrop community.

Senior business administration major Brittany Threatt, president of Student Veterans of Winthrop, credited faculty members and Mahony with helping students transition from military to civilian life and succeed in their Winthrop careers.

“The administration helps us in any way possible in order to get our veterans what they need on and off campus. They make sure that we are not left behind,” said Threatt, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran.

The Military Friendly® Schools List is created each year based on public data obtained from the Departments of Education, Veterans Affairs and Defense. Supplementing public data are responses from participating colleges and universities to questions in the above six categories that are deemed to be critical in helping student veterans thrive on campus and after graduation.
