Winthrop President Dan Mahony signs three-year contract

July 8, 2015

ROCK HILL, SC – A three-year contract has been signed by Winthrop University President Daniel Mahony and Board of Trustees Chair Kathy Bigham.

Winthrop’s Board of Trustees voted in March to hire Mahony as the university’s 11th president.

Mahony’s contract will run from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2018. On the second anniversary of the contract and on each subsequent anniversary, trustees will automatically consider extending the contract for another year.

“This formally brings to a conclusion Winthrop’s search for the next president and prepares us to benefit from Dan Mahony’s leadership and experience,” said Bigham. “As a rolling contract, it follows the concept that has been in place at Winthrop for many years.”

The contract gives Mahony a state-funded salary of $174,000 per year as set by the South Carolina Agency Head Salary Commission and approved by the South Carolina Budget and Control Board.

Mahony’s salary will be supplemented with $160,000 annually from the Winthrop Foundation.

The contract provides Mahony a faculty appointment as tenured professor of sport management.

Mahony previously served for seven years as dean of the College of Education, Health, and Human Services at Ohio’s Kent State University. Dr. Mahony’s college was nearly the size of Winthrop with over 600 employees, about 5,400 students, and a $30 million budget.
