Wofford to host ‘Salute to Service’ at Saturday’s game

November 15, 2016

The Wofford College football team will host VMI at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, at Gibbs Stadium for the annual “Salute to Service” game in a contest with huge NCAA FCS Playoff implications.

Military veterans, National Guard members, active duty military and their families may purchase discounted tickets for $10 to Saturday’s game. They can receive the discount by showing their military ID at the Gibbs Stadium ticket booths beginning at noon Saturday.

Fans also are encouraged to help our homeless veterans as Upstate Warrior Solution hosts a donation drive seeking blankets, coats, towels, washcloths, socks, warm hats and gloves at the game. Donations will be taken at all three gates on the Wofford side of Gibbs Stadium and given to homeless veterans in our community through Upstate Warrior Solution.

Wofford also has donated a large number of tickets to the game for veterans to be distributed by the Wofford College Army ROTC at the Spartanburg Community Based Outpatient Clinic, a division of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

The Military History Club of the Carolinas, coordinated by Eddie Davis, a staff member at Wofford, will display a number of historic military vehicles outside Gibbs Stadium including (subject to change): 1969 M35A2 2.5 ton truck (Vietnam War to present day), 1967 M715 1 ton truck (Vietnam), 1964 M274 half ton truck (Vietnam), 1942 Ford GPW Jeep (World War II), 1969 M151A1 Jeep (Vietnam) and a 1953 M37 ton truck (Korean War through Cold War).

During the game, Wofford will recognize all military veterans and encourage everyone to join in the singing of “God Bless America,” to be performed by the Wofford Singers at the end of the first quarter.

The Terriers (7-3, 5-2) face a must-win scenario to make the FCS Playoffs. The Terriers are coming off a dramatic 36-28 victory at Chattanooga last Saturday. Wofford is ranked 19th in the latest FCS Coaches Poll and 20th in the STATS FCS Poll. The Terriers return to the Top 25 rankings for the first time since November 2013. VMI, which has played spoiler to the Terriers’ postseason hopes in the past, enters at 3-7, 1-6 in Southern Conference play.
