Woolbright becomes Lexington High athletic director/head football coach

LEXINGTON, SC – During a February 11, 2017 special board workshop, the Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees approved the hire of William Perry Woolbright as Lexington High School athletic director and head football coach. Woolbright joins Lexington District One on February 20, 2017.
Woolbright says coaching is in his blood as he grew up on practice fields and the sidelines while his father and grandfather, each a successful South Carolina athletic director and head football coach for more than 30 years, coached.
Woolbright currently serves as head football coach and assistant athletic director at Batesburg-Leesville High School in Lexington County School District Three, where he also teaches physical education. His three seasons at Batesburg-Leesville High earned a 27-12 record. His first-year team won a region championship, his second-year team lost in the second round of playoffs to the eventual state champion and his third-year team went to the state championship game as lower state champions.
Before joining Batesburg-Leesville High, he was a physical education teacher and head football coach at North Myrtle Beach High School for four seasons. His last season there, the North Myrtle Beach High football team created school history with the team’s best season in school history (9-3) after making it to the second round of state playoffs.
At 35 years old, he brings 11 years of coaching experience, including seven years as head football coach, to LHS.
Woolbright began his coaching career while still a student at Appalachian State University in 2005, where he served as offensive assistant. He joined Fort Dorchester High School in Dorchester School District Two in 2006 as a physical education and weight training teacher and offensive coordinator for football.
Woolbright joined Chowan University in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, as offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator in 2007. He served as interim head coach there in 2008.
He joined the Cherokee County School District’s Gaffney High School as passing game coordinator/quarterback coach, and began his teaching career by teaching physical education at Grassy Pond Elementary. The offense averaged 36 points per game over that two-year period.
In 2010, he moved to North Myrtle Beach High School in the Horry County School District where he taught physical education while serving as head football coach. From there he traveled to Batesburg-Leesville High School in 2014.
Woolbright holds 2014 Region Coach of the Year and 2013 Region Coach of the Year awards earned while coaching two different teams.
A member of the American Football Coaches Association and the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association, Woolbright holds a Bachelor of Science in physical education from Appalachian State University, where he played on the football team for four years. He is certified to teach physical education in grades K–12.
Woolbright and his wife, Heidi, a fifth-grade teacher at Lake Murray Elementary, have three children Brayden (11), Brody (9) and Brantlee (4).
