Wyche announced that Matthew Couvillion and Josh Lonon have been named shareholders of the firm.
Matthew Couvillion serves as the firm’s Corporate Practice Group leader and focuses his practice at Wyche on transactional matters, with an emphasis on corporate law, tax, and non-profit tax exempt organizations. He has experience advising clients on mergers and acquisitions, tax matters, and corporate governance issues. Couvillion represents tax exempt organizations, including private foundations, large public charities, colleges and universities, trade organizations, and churches, on tax, governance and transactional issues related to their tax exempt status. He is also a member of Wyche’s Corporate, Tax, Non-profit and Economic Development and& Incentives teams where he advises clients on matters related to tax credits and incentives.
Couvillion is Director and Treasurer of the Greenville Bar Pro Bono Association and is the Chair-Elect for 2020. In 2018 he was recognized by that group as a “Pro Bono Super Hero.” In the Spring of 2020 he will be an Adjunct Professor at the University of South Carolina School of Law teaching the Business Organization Capstone course. Couvillion currently also serves on the Board of Directors of SCBIO and SCBIO Foundation. He is also part of Leadership Greenville Class 46. Prior to joining Wyche, he worked in private practice in Washington, D.C., Greenville, SC and Atlanta, GA and served as a law clerk to the Honorable Alexander Macaulay on the 10th Judicial Circuit of South Carolina. Couvillion received his LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University Law Center, and earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was the Managing Editor of the South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business and graduated from Auburn University.
Josh Lonon practices in the areas of commercial real estate law and economic development and leads the firm’s Real Estate Practice Group and Spartanburg office. He represents companies in the acquisition, financing, development, leasing and sale of a broad range of commercial properties including industrial, multi-family, office and retail, as well as in the application and approval of tax incentives for their development. Lonon has extensive experience with title insurance companies both as outside and inside counsel, giving him keen insight into solving complex title and title insurance issues.
Lonon has held several leadership positions with the South Carolina Bar and currently serves as chair of its Real Estate Practices Section. He is also a member of the executive committee of the Upstate, South Carolina chapter of the Urban Land Institute. As a native of Spartanburg, Lonon has led numerous non-profits, served as chair of the City of Spartanburg Board of Zoning and Appeals, and as a member of the City’s Board of Architectural Design and Historic Review. He is a graduate of the South Carolina Bar Leadership Academy, Leadership Spartanburg and is a Regional Fellow of the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. Lonon formerly served as a law clerk to the Honorable G. Thomas Cooper, Jr. of the Fifth Judicial Circuit and is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Law where he was the Managing Editor of the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal and a competing member of the Moot Court Bar.
