YMCA Camp Greenville Dedicates Brand-New Cabin To Former YMCA Executive Director, Charlie Johnson, Allowing For Additional Campers

The YMCA of Greenville today honored the legacy of the late Charlie Johnson for his impact and service as the Greater Greenville YMCA Executive Director from 1967 to 1978.

Family, staff and community members gathered at YMCA Camp Greenville in Cleveland, SC for the unveiling of the new cabin, which will enable Camp Greenville to serve an additional 96 campers each summer. Camp Greenville currently has a waitlist of more than 800 children. Two identical cabins are slated to be built on each side of the Charlie Johnson cabin and are currently seeking funding.

The Charlie Johnson cabin was generously funded by the Stephen D. Mitchell Foundation, in memory of their uncle. The cabin will house 12 campers each week for the eight weeks of camp and is situated in the location of the original Camp Greenville cabins, built in 1925.

As Executive Director of the Greater Greenville YMCA, Johnson’s leadership and devotion to the mission of the YMCA resulted in many “firsts” in bringing vital programs to the Metro YMCA, many of which continue to this day.

A few of Johnson’s accomplishments in his tenure include :

• Broadening the geographic area to include all of Greenville County, resulting in additional YMCA branches
• Organizing the first YMCA childcare program in the 1970s
• Implementing youth soccer at the YMCA
• Creating the YMCA Endowment Corporation for the Greater Greenville YMCA, which was chartered in 1976.
