YMCA locations serving as donation sites as Harvest Hope declares food emergency

August 12, 2016

Harvest Hope Food Bank and our community members who depend on them need our help. They have declared a “food emergency,” as their canned good donations and contributions have been low this summer although demand has increased.

At the Y, we’re dedicated to strengthening community by giving back and supporting our neighbors. You may have joined the Y as a place to improve your well-being, help your kids learn and grow, or connect with others who share your interest. Now your membership can mean even more. As part of a charitable organization dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, you can play a role in making our community stronger.

Today, we call on our members, staff and volunteers to participate in one of the Y’s Togetherhood® initiatives by donating goods to Harvest Hope at any of our locations.

The most needed items include:
Can goods: canned vegetables, canned meats, Chef Boyardee, fruit (pop-tops), soups (chicken noodle, tomato), any pop-top cans (tuna, etc.), evaporated milk, beans
Dry goods: peanut butter, rice, box cereal, oatmeal/grits, coffee, crackers, powdered milk, beans, baby formula
Personal items: toiletries, diapers, baby wipes, soap, shampoo, feminine products, toothpaste, toilet paper, detergent, plastic bags, paper bags
Please keep food separate from household cleaning supplies and health & beauty items.

What is Togetherhood?

Togetherhood® is the Y’s member-led volunteer service program to strengthen community. The program aims to deliver lasting social change by addressing the social isolation, disconnectedness and lack of civic engagement found in communities across the U.S. Through Togetherhood, Y members from all backgrounds work with their neighbors and community partners to plan and lead volunteer service projects that respond to a need in the community where they live. By working together in small groups, Y members forge new friendships and improve their own wellbeing while meeting local needs. Launched in 2013, Togetherhood is YMCA of the USA’s Signature Program for Social Responsibility.
