‘Your Health is Your Wealth’: City of Columbia brings focus to diabetes and kidney wellness
April 17, 2025Who: District II Councilman Edward McDowell, Jr., Columbia Black Expo Director Darrin Thomas and Dr. Bambi Gaddist, Structural Health Dynamic, LLC and Public Health Consultant
What: The City of Columbia recognizes that raising awareness about diabetes and kidney health is vital to the overall well-being and prosperity of our residents. District II Councilman Edward McDowell, Jr., Columbia Black Expo Director Darrin Thomas, and Dr. Bambi Gaddist, Structural Health Dynamic, LLC and Public Health Consultant share vital insights on why taking action to take control of your own health and addressing health concerns is extremely important. This is especially true in communities where access to nutritious food, preventive care, and health education is limited. These areas experience higher rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes and kidney disease, which disproportionately affect African American residents.
At the 2025 Columbia Black Expo, health and wellness are taking center stage like never before. With this year’s theme, “Your Health is Your Wealth,” the Expo is launching dynamic new initiatives that empower individuals to take charge of their health and connect it to broader economic opportunity. Attendees can expect on-site screenings, interactive workshops, expert panels, and access to community health resources, all in collaboration with local hospitals, nonprofits, farms, wellness programs, and more.
These efforts reflect the City of Columbia and City Council’s belief that when individuals invest in their health, the ripple effects strengthen entire communities, fostering resilience, connection, and a future full of possibility.
