Your voice is needed: Help shape Georgetown County’s new Oyster Recycling Program!

June 8, 2026

Georgetown County recently announced an exciting new oyster shell recycling initiative to help clean our local waters, restore declining oyster populations, and keep tons of waste out of our landfills. But to make this eco-friendly project a true success, the county needs to hear from you.

A public survey is currently underway to determine the absolute best, most impactful spots to place oyster shell collection stations. Whether you are a full-time resident, a local business owner, a frequent visitor, or a seafood retailer, your habits and input are incredibly valuable.

Why Your Input Matters

Oysters are natural powerhouses for our local ecosystem. A single adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day, removing pollutants and excess nutrients from our beautiful waterways. By telling the Stormwater Division where collection bins would be most convenient for you, you are directly helping to:

  • Build new oyster colonies using recycled shells and coconut husks.

  • Protect local coastlines from erosion.

  • Keep landfills free of heavy shells that don’t decompose.

Take 2 Minutes to Make a Difference

The information-gathering phase relies entirely on community feedback. If you love Murrells Inlet seafood, care about local water quality, or just want to see Georgetown County thrive, please take a couple of minutes to voice your opinion.

👉 Take the Survey Now: You can access the public survey directly at the Georgetown County Stormwater Division Page.
